South Tyrolean wines
The activities related to viticulture in South Tyrol date back to ancient times, maybe even 3000 years ago.
The most ancient sources refer to the Rhaetian people, who lived in the Central Eastern Alps even before the Roman Empire and who already used wooden barrels to store and carry wine.
It must be also considered that South Tyrol is situated in a particular geographical area characterised by both an alpine climate and a Mediterranean climate, which is the reason why many varieties are cultivated on the territory.
So, you can’t spend your holidays in South Tyrol without tasting local wine and without experiencing local traditions.
Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Yellow Muscat and Gewürztraminer are some of the excellent white wines that you can taste.
Or Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet and Pink Muscat, if you prefer red wines.
Sparkling wines are also excellent, because the grapes that grow on high grounds reach an adequate level of acidity, which lends an appealing freshness to the wines even after the second fermentation. Typical sparkling wines are produced with the “classical” method. Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the most used.
